Stephen Strasburg exceeded expectations in his much-hyped major league debut, striking out 14 in seven innings to lead the Washington Nationals to a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Ike Davis homered in the 11th inning and Mike Pelfrey turned in another terrific outing for New York, which won its ninth straight home game.

Ben Francisco hit a two-run single with two outs in the eighth inning to help Philadelphia rally.

Matt Cain pitched a seven-hitter for his second shutout of the season, extending his recent run of dominance, and singled home a run in the eighth inning Tuesday night, helping the San Francisco Giants pull away to a 3-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Cain (5-4) subdued the NLs most prolific offense – Brandon Phillips had three of Cincinnatis hits – while going the distance for the third time this season. He has all of the Giants complete games.

Juan Uribe hit his ninth homer into the upper deck in left field off right-hander Sam LeCure (1-2). Slumping Bengie Molina and Cain added run-scoring singles in the eighth off Nick Masset.

The Giants have won the first two games in the series and 10 of their last 14 overall.
