On Monday, Toronto discovered just how unexpectedly resilient Ottawa can be. After leading 5-1 in the second period and playing dominantly, Toronto was stunned and walked away with a 6-5 loss in overtime. The league’s top scorer, Auston Matthews scored two goals and added one assist, but it wasn’t enough against the Sens, who came alive after potting a shorthanded goal at the end of the second to start the third period down 5-2. Ottawa also benefitted from 18 giveaways by Toronto.

The Leafs will be highly-motivated to win Game 2 against their provincial rivals. They lost to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday after playing a stronger game, so now they’re facing their first back-to-back losses on the season. Even with the mini slide, however, the Leafs still have a two-point lead over the Boston Bruins for top position in the league and a four-point lead over the Canadiens in the North.
