MLB Odds: Phillies-Red Sox on MLB Network

The Boston Red Sox refuse to die. Their odds of repeating as World Series champions have plummeted to +4000 at press time, but after series wins over Cleveland and Baltimore, at least the Red Sox are within earshot of a Wild Card berth in the American League. They’ll try to close the gap this Wednesday when they host the Philadelphia Phillies in the second of back-to-back games at Fenway Park. First pitch is at 7:10 PM ET on the MLB Network.

Starting pitching has been one of Boston’s bugaboos this year. Rick Porcello (5.49 ERA) will take the mound for the Red Sox; he was the 2016 AL Cy Young winner, but that award was an anomaly, and while Porcello has Boston at 15-10 this year, he’s also been gifted 7.24 runs of support per game, driving the Over to a 17-8 record.

Southpaw Drew Smyly (7.09 ERA) has had an even worse year for Philadelphia. He’s yet to fully recover from the Tommy John surgery he had in 2017, beginning this season in the minors and signing with Philly in late July. Despite his woes, the Phillies have won four of Smyly’s five starts (Over 3-2) thus far.
