Arnold Palmer entertained fans as he christened his newest signature course at Wexford Plantation.
After about an 18-month redesign of the plantations layout, Palmer gave a clinic and answered questions for fans on Thursday. Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin declared it “Arnold Palmer Day.”
Palmer opened the course the way he wanted – even if it took him a couple of tries.
He hooked his first tee shot into the trees to christen the redesigned layout, then quickly called for a mulligan to the applause of several hundred on hand to watch. Palmers second shot landed in the fairway to more cheers.
Palmer was grateful to be back. He won the PGA Tours inaugural Heritage Classic in 1969, boosting the profile of then largely unknown vacation spot.
